middle east cross cultural training
We have lived in the middle east since August of last year. First in Oman, now in Doha. My husband's company is just NOW (over a year later) getting around to our cross cultural training. Needless to say it was ridiculously stupid. First, they flew in some British guy to come and speak to us about the Arab culture. Come on! Really? He did such a disastrously poor job. The entire time he basically degraded the entire culture and their work ethics. Ok - I get that some arabs don't like to work...but as my husband pointed out to the presenter, one of his BEST workers is from Doha. Next, they brought in an expat housewife to speak to us about daily living. I actually corrected her on some things. It was embarrassing. Plus her left boob was hanging out. I totally could see her nipple her shirt was so low cut and she kept hunching over. The leacherous british presenter just salivated, David looked away. THEN she went into the schpeel about being respectful to the culture and what to wear and not...I almost lost it. I could feel a maniacal laugh approaching the surface...then I held my breathe hoping it would go away. The urge remained. Until finally she yanked on her see-through camisole and managed to cover her breast again. Just in time as I was about to completely just lose it. Then these men kept knocking on the door....apparently we were in the waiting room to the men's bathroom!!!! GROSS! Suddenly the stains on the furniture took on a whole new dimension. Ick. So....all in all, a waste of my time...EXCEPT....that I got to focus a bit more on perfecting my english accent...with a twist of south african.

This is crazy! Thanks for sending me your link. I read your last few entries and they are so entertaining. I really wish your family was still here.
dawnell - go back as far as you can and start there...you might find some helpful (or at least recognizable) things from when I first moved to Oman. THat is when I started the blog. ps - a part of me wishes that I was still there as well...I think everyone feels that way about Oman in the end.
scarlett - sorry, I don't know why I didn't answer earlier...how do the two places compare? That is a really tough question to answer. I will have to dedicate an entire post to it....keep your eyes peeled!
