After one of the shows of The Music Man (or maybe it was a rehearsal...) Madelyn very dramatically, and though I was driving I couldn't see it, but I imagine her placing the back of her hand on her forehead while saying "Mommy, whatever will we do without the The-tee-ur when we move!?!" Imagine it with a whine and southeast texas/southern belle accent. And yes, the daughter of my womb cannot say theatre she says Thee-tee-ur. No matter how many times I correct her. Nonetheless, she was distressed.
I very confidently told her "sweetie, there is a theatre there, don't worry!" I had already scoped Muscat out and given it the stamp of my approval...they had the Muscat Amateur Theatre!
"BUT, Mommy? What if there isn't one?" She is on the verge of tears now. I glance back in my rearview mirror and Madelyn is seriously upset and Angelina has also moved forward in her seat with a look of concern.
I started doubting my research - it had holes in it. They didn't have a website. So, I said the only thing I knew to be true.
"No matter what, wherever we are there will always be theatre."
Silence. I glance back. They are pondering this idea.
"But mommy..."
"Madelyn, I promise you, if there isn't a theatre (thinking there definitely will be) we will make one."
"Really?"
"Really!"
Silence.
Angelina breaks the quiet "But we won't have a stage."
"Oh yes we will! We will build it with wood!" Madelyn excitedly replies.
The girls get into a discussion on EXACT details. We are going to hang curtains by using clips and sheets. Daddy is going to direct because as Madelyn put it "I don't think he would like to be on the stage." Parker is going to be our audience. Until he gets bigger, then he can be in it...woops...then we won't have an audience anymore! Things get tense in the car...NO audience!!! Panic ensues. Then I suggest that perhaps we could video. Madelyn runs with that idea and takes it to the next level...no! Nonny and Poppy can make popcorn and watch it live over the computer...etc. etc. All the way home.
I go to bed breathing a sigh of relief that I won't have to ACTUALLY deal with any of that because Muscat has a theatre.
Well, guess what! I'M GOING TO HAVE TO BUILD ONE. Because I was wrong...so o o ooooooo wrong. I have been on the internet trying my hardest to find out how to get in contact with the Muscat Amateur Theatre...and the only thing I can find out is that in the 90's they were strong. Well it isn't the 90's anymore and I am kicking myself now.
I should never make promises...never, never, never...because then I have to keep them.
Oh and to make things worse I have an ear infection.
Yeah so...all you muscateers...you are invited to our first performance...I will pay R.O. 2 to come and watch and clap and smile and say this is the "BEST THEE-TEE-UR EVER!"

I am sure you already know all of this, but just in case: There are at least two dramatics groups here, one at the PDO club, and the one you mentioned. THey both put on shows a few times a year. There are a few theatres available, and most of the western schools have really really state of the art facilities.
are you serious? It is still around? I went to some board and they said they didn't exist anymore. And Angry in Oman mentioned that she didn't think they existed...I was devastated thinking about hanging up curtains and coming up with scripts. etc.
What is the PDO club?
I have never heard of either theater groups to be honest, never seen them advertise any shows.
There is a proper theater being built just near the Intercon along with the symphany building.
I have been to PDO club twice for events. Syria Night which was really neat, and the Canadian Stampede, which I got extremely drunk at (and so did everyone else).
So, yes they do have a stage there and the events seem to be very popular.
Petrolium Development Oman (PDO) is a major oil company/refinery here and they have a club and a stage.
